Shelby was home to so much early gridiron history, so many milestones. The first Black pro football player, Charles "Black Cyclone" Follis, debuted for the Blues in 1902—and may well have influenced his Shelby teammate Branch Rickey's eventual push for integration in baseball. Peggy Parratt, pioneer of the forward pass, led the Blues to Ohio League championships in 1910 and 1911. When the Ohio League became the APFA/NFL, Shelby continued competing against its Ohio rivals but did not make the leap with them and ultimately suspended operations. To put into perspective the rarity of surviving Shelby Blues memorabilia, this is the first piece we've ever offered in our decades of auctioneering! The 1-1/4" pinback is a miraculously preserved EX-MT beauty complete with its fully intact back-paper insert. Museum-worthy!
