Recall a seminal season for the Houston Astros with this 1965 team signed baseball. The year 1965 saw the opening of the Astrodome, and it was also the year the team name was changed from the Colt .45s to the Astros. As can be expected of a fairly recent expansion team, the Astros didn't win a whole lot that year, however rising stars Mike Cuellar and Rusty Staub were under the dome, while veteran Hall of Famers Robin Roberts and Nellie Fox were winding down their illustrious careers. These four standouts and many of their teammates joined in the signing of this vintage ONL/Giles ball, which bears a total of (25) black ballpoint pen autographs under a thin layer of shellac. Signature strength averages ("7-8") with:
Sweet spot: Lum Harris (manager);
North panel: Lee Maye, Howie Pollet (coach), Gene Ratliff, Don Nottebart, Joe Gaines, Eddie Kasko, Bob Lillis;
South panel: Bob Bruce, Robin Roberts (HOF), Dave Aldesh, Dan Coombs, Dick Farrell, Frank Thomas, Rusty Staub;
East panel: Mike Cuellar, Ron Brand, Ron Taylor, Dave Giusti;
West panel: Larry Dierker, Nellie Fox (HOF), Walt Bond, Bob Aspromonte, Jim Gentile and Jim Owens.
