Winfield Scott, known affectionately as Old Fuss and Feathers, served in the military under every president from Jefferson to Lincoln, a total of fourteen administrations - 47 years of service. Historians rank him highly both as a strategist (he was the Union's general-in-chief at the beginning of the Civil War) and a Presidential candidate in 1852. The offered three items chronicle these areas of his illustrious life in America. Included are: 1.) 1842 letter with hand-written notation signed in the lower right corner by Winfield Scott (d.1866, "6"); 2.) 1-1/8" brass campaign token/coin/medallion/medalet from 1852 with the obverse showing a right facing bust of Scott encompassed by GEN. WINFIELD SCOTT FIRST IN WAR FIRST IN PEACE and the reverse showing SCOTT & GRAHAM - UNION & CONSTITUTION displayed around an eagle, condition (VG-EX); 3.) 1860s Mathew Brady Carte de Visite (CDV) of Scott as the Union Commander (EX-MT) condition with minimal writing on the reverse. The autographed letter comes with an auction LOA from James Spence Authentications.
