Legendary thoroughbreds and mint juleps have long been the fare the first Saturday of every May at Kentucky's Churchill Downs. Add to that menu the coveted souvenir glasses like the ones offered in this near-complete run of (61). Crafted each year from 1948 to the present by the Libbey Glass Co., the offered examples represent each and every year, save for 1951. As for the omission, it is well documented that a dramatic drop-off in production in both 1950 and 1951 was attributed to the Korean War. Resultantly, Libbey experimented with a much more fragile type of glass during those years, which further accounts for the fact that there are few survivors. This collection runs from 1948 through 2009 with the above-mentioned interruption. The vast majority of these keepsakes list the event and its winners, from Aristides in 1875 to Big Brown in 2008 (with the likes of War Admiral, Whirlaway and Seattle Slew in between).
