Prior to dreaming up baseball's All-Star Game, Chicago Tribune Sports Editor Arch Ward had an equally well-received idea on the amateur boxing front. Still going strong, the Ward-conceived "Golden Gloves" tournament has showcased some of the ring's most iconic battlers. This lot of (77) tickets, stubs and press passes hails from the 1940s through 1960s and includes title night vouchers (mostly EX to EX-MT) from several who were to subsequently gain acclaim on the professional canvas. Highlighting the (9) full tickets are: (3) Sonny Liston March 6, 1953, (1) is (EX-MT) and (2) are (EX); and Jimmy Ellis March 8, 1961 (VG-EX). The (55) stubs include (2) Joey Maxim March 6, 1940, (minimally EX-MT with vertical admission tears, Bantamweight legend Harold Dade was on that night's card, as well). Also included are (13) press credentials (3 with original strings) dating from 1940 through 1957.
