Description

The last active NHL player to have played in the WHA, Hall of Fame center Mark Messier is also the lone athlete to captain two different franchises to championships and, as the curtain came down on his remarkable career in 2004, the last active player to have played in the NHL during the 1970s. The offered New York Rangers home jersey was worn and signed by the Edmonton-born legend during the 1995-96 season. With six Stanley Cup titles (five in his native Edmonton), two Hart Trophies and one Conn Smythe Trophy already to his credit, the 35-year-old Messier wore this white mesh pullover garment as he paced the '95-'96 Rangers with 47 goals and 99 points. In blue-on-red double tackle twill, “RANGERS” is angled downward in block-style characters across the front while an upper case “C” near the left shoulder denotes Messier's captaincy. On the back, the since-retired (by both the Rangers and Oilers) number “11” is sewn in blue-on-red and “MESSIER” is arched just above in like fashion. Executed vertically on the second “1,” Messier's silver Sharpie autograph (“8” strength) is accompanied by his inscription of “#11.” Red-and-blue striped patterns line the lower torso and three-quarter sleeves while red-and-white stretch knit accents the V-neck and the blue mesh shoulder panels. Within the left rear tail, a manufacturer's stamping denotes “SET 1, 95-96. On the back right tail, “CCM” and “NHL” logos are embroidered in the appropriate colors. Within the collar, a “Gerry Cosby” local distributor's label is accompanied by a “CCM” fabric content tag and a size “52” flap tag. Moderate wear is evident in the form of stick marks and minimal fraying throughout, as well as a tiny hole at the right rear tail. Donned at Madison Square Garden, this battle-tested apparel was worn during a home campaign in which Messier became the 21st member of the 500-Goal Club. Accompanying is a full photo LOA from Rob Orsimarsi and an auction LOA from James Spence Authentications.
